Lead engineer responsible for reconfiguration and upgrade of mission critical enterprise environment, including data center and user access layers. Given that the user community were traders, the device and network configurations developed were optimized for Market Data and VoIP, and implemented with multiple redundancies. Upgrade required coordinating with network security on ACL and firewall rules development, as well as coordinating with Compliance Officers on documentation. In addition to normal duties, worked with global team to merge Lehman Brothers and Barclays Capital MPLS and DLSW WANs. Those duties included developing configurations for new global network routers, as well as upgrading existing router configurations to link Lehman and Barclays networks. Normal duties included coordinating BOMs, POs, and device delivery; developing fiber and copper cable patching schedules; coordinating cabling and electrical power teams; interfacing with project managers; as well as providing Day One support. Responsible for validating and implementing a new multicast network that consolidated reception and management of multiple Market Data feeds (SIAC, NASDAQ, Etc.), redistributed the new consolidated feeds across FTID’s new multicast intranet. Assignment required managing conflicting technical and business needs, as well as knowledge of Cisco multicast, QoS, and troubleshooting. Additional skills utilized included protocol analysis, fully redundant route/switch configuration, disaster planning, technical and non-technical vendor relations, UNIX/Linux systems administration, and Cisco network management.

Responsible for implementing NMCI Base Area Network designs as per DoD/DoN defined guidelines. Assignment required interacting with multiple vendors to meet multiple, and often, conflicting deadlines. Coordinated with NOCs for final testing and hand off. Processed and maintained NMCI / DoD documentation. XAND Corporation (January 2001 - September 2002)

Consultant - Senior Network Engineer

Designed and implemented a Data/VoIP network using a TCP/IP based OSPF high availability backbone composed of fully redundant Cisco Catalyst 6500 switches using HSRP, with ISL and 802.1q trunks, to a distribution layer composed of Catalyst 4000 switches. Reconfigured border layer routers, composed of Cisco 7500s using ATM and Sonet, extending BGP redistribution into the core, and implemented IP Multicast. This network was systematically phased in replacing the existing Nortel based network. Given existing contracted SLAs, near zero downtime was allowable. Additional WAN connectivity was provided utilizing Cisco 2500, 2600, 3600, 7500 series routers, and Baynetworks/NORTEL switches. Managed junior engineers and coordinated support activities (moves/adds/changes) with Data Center Management and implemented QoS. Supported PIX, Checkpoint and Netscreen firewalls and VPNs, Arrowpoint/CSS load balancers. Established network security procedures.

 

MimEcom/Totality (April 2000 - January 4, 2001)

Designed and maintained high performance, conventional and multicast, e-commerce sites for Garden.Com, and Tavolo.Com. Provided pre-sales architecture and engineering support for clients such as VitaminShoppe.Com, YachtWorld.Com, MarthaStewart.Com. Lead network engineer for Premier Compaq/Cisco VAR LAN/WAN. Duties included, design and implementation planning as well as providing technical lead for junior network engineers. Conducted site surveys documenting existing installations, and authored network redesigns. Planned and implemented network redesigns including IP and IPX readdressing, DNS updates, and routing protocol migrations, migrating RIP to EIGRP, and RTMP to EIGRP. Planned and implemented “cross firewall moves” including DNS and firewall reconfiguration, external server migrated to internal network while retaining full or selective public access. Selected, installed and maintained Cisco routers, Catalyst switches, PIX, Netscreen and Raptor firewalls. Coordinated network moves, additions, and changes with Service Providers. Lead network engineer providing LAN/WAN planning, analysis, and management for New York administration and data centers (EIGRP networks with clear channel T1 links) as well as managed connectivity with medical centers throughout New York metropolitan area utilizing a Frame Relay network. Supported SEC disclosure reporting of network and security infrastructure. Configured and maintained Cisco 7500, and 2500 series routers, as well as Cisco Catalyst 5500 series switches. Designed DMZ network utilizing PIX firewall and designed VTP domain for the DMZ. Migrated “Outside Venders” (GHI, UUNET, etc.) onto the DMZ. Provided network management, analysis, and operations support for the J.P. Morgan NY Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), including both back-office and admistrative networks as well as trading floors. Managed and administrated Token Ring, Ethernet, and FDDI networks in the Wall Street campus, as well as ATM, Sonet and Frame Relay WAN links to other J.P. Morgan MANs (Singapore, Hong Kong, Paris, London, etc.). Managed and troubleshot network problems utilizing HP OpenView, Baynetworks’ Optivity, and Cisco Works. Provided hardware support and configuration maintenance for Cisco routers, Cisco Catalyst switches, Nortel Baynetworks SynOptics hubs and bridges. Supported Cisco VLAN deployments.

 

Credit Lyonnais - Americas (March 1998)

Consultant - Network Engineer / Architect

Redesigned network based on a Fastethernet / Fast EtherChannel architecture. The redesign involved capacity planning and growth projections for five years for both back-office operations as well a real-time trading and market data networks. In order to facilitate vendor selection I created two separate proposals for both Cisco products and Cabletron products. Using these proposals as a baseline the client was able to make the selection of a singe network equipment vendor. The final design used VLANs and Cisco Catalyst 5500s with RSMs to provide collapsed backbone, layer 2 and 3 switching as well as high speed routing. Identical Catalyst 5500s were paired using Fast EtherChannel trunks to provide redundancy. Additional Catalyst 5500s were used to provide the access layer and allow switched 10/100 Base T to the desktop. Connectivity to a disaster recovery site was provided by using ATM OC3 over two 14km single mode fiber pairs.

 

New York City - Health & Hospitals Corporation (February 1997 - February 1998)

Consultant - Network Architect

Designed a Novell IntranetWare 4.11 based NDS tree running over a frame relay network connecting all NYC HHC facilities and hospitals. The design had to factor in limited network bandwidth, limited technical support staff, a future implementation of GroupWise and a (as yet unfinished) document management and distribution system. Additionally it had to run on the existing server platform, since no budget had been allocated for the purchase of new servers. Conducted test implementations of GroupWise 5.x. Provided technical and financial analysis for converting the existing DaVinci/Global MHS based email system to GroupWise 5.x. Troubleshot Novell NetWare and IntranetWare servers, including disaster recovery. Troubleshot Novell workstation clients, including Client32, and MS NetWare client. Analyzed vendor proposals from ISP’s for providing Internet access, and fire-walling for the NYC HHC network. Included in the analysis were bandwidth issues having to do with large document delivery, email gateways, scheduling applications, and future streaming technologies. Authored the network implementation plan, the NDS management guide, and the LAN administration guide. Designed and implemented Electronic Data Transfer system allowing outside agencies and vendors to transfer mainframe based financial and personnel data from mainframes, and Novell LANs to NYC HHC in a secure and reliable manner. The implementation had to adhere to systems requirements set by NYC HHC Auditors and Security.

 

American International Group (October 1996 - November 1996)

Consultant – C/C++ Programmer Analyst

Reverse engineered AIG’s mission critical insurance premium calculation application in preparation for the development of a new application suite. The assignment required identifying and extracting insurance industry, and AIG specific business rules used in premium calculations, from raw C code. The code was ten years old, had undergone several modifications and was completely undocumented. Additionally, there was no existing business rules dictionary to use as a reference guide, and the deliverable date could not be changed.

 

 

Volvo Cars of North America (September 1995 - September 1996)

Consultant - Network Engineer / LAN Administrator

Implemented a new Cisco 7000/Baynetworks Centillion Speedswitch based 16 Mbit Token Ring and 10/100 Ethernet network replacing the existing 4 Mbit Token Ring network. This included migration from source routing to EIGRP, as well as migrating from RIP and IPX RIP to EIGRP. Supported Novell Netware 4 based LANs. Managed VCNA portion of the Volvo Global Network using HPUX OpenView/Optivity network management tools. Authored and implemented the network certification plan. Prepared RFPs for out-sourcing of WAN installations and support. Designed and built Network and Applications Integration Lab (QA Lab.) Ran NT vs. 95 trials, and authored the 32 bit OS requirements guide. Authored the NT implementation guide.
